Description & Application:
For seaside themed and festive food make a presentation statement with these fully cleaned, natural scallop shells presented in a "pick 'n mix" range of sizes". Not only have these shells been used as serving dishes, our customers have utilised them for crafts and interior/exterior decoration. Just like buying any food plate wash thoroughly before use. (They will happily survive a cycle in the dish washer !)

Our clients have also used these shells as the basis for personalised wedding favours.

Responsible Sourcing: These shells are recycled from staple seafood sources

Background: Scallops are marine bi-valves found in all the world's oceans. In total there are some 350 species and many of them like our Candy Fans are an important food source.

Scallop Shells in History: The scallop shell symbol has found its way into heraldry, for example Winston Churchill's family has a scallop shell in its coat of arms and New York has adopted the Atlantic Bay Scallop as its State shell.

In 1833 Marcus Samuel opened a small shop in London selling sea shells to natural history enthusiasts. Some years later his son recognised an opportunity to trade kerosene oil to the far east for lamps and cooking. Today the company formed has one of the most readily recognisable "Shell" logos in the world.

Use of Shells for Food Presentation.

Seashells like these Scallops are known as bi-valves. These make the best presentation platters due to their bowl-like shape and the ability to clean them thoroughly on all surfaces.

Sea shells offered by OnLine Shells as serving dishes are made naturally form the mineral Calcium Carbonate. We are not aware of any other compounds or minerals within the seashells that would preclude their use as food presentation dishes.

Seashells have a complex layered construction, making them extremely strong and light weight. In many cases seashells are stronger than ceramic plates, but be aware that chipping can occur with thinner shells, especially blue mussels and these river oysters.

Whilst seashells are dishwasher safe we would suggest that hand washing may be more practical. Online Shells have been thoroughly cleaned, however, post cleaning the shells are stored under warehouse conditions and appropriate measures should be taken commensurate with established food hygiene practice before using seashells for food presentation.

Seashells are non-porous. However. there can be occasions when deterioration of the surface can cause pitting which could potentially harbor bacteria if the shells are not properly cleaned when multi-used.

Seashells can be used for cooking and presentation of hot food. Do not put seashells in the microwave.

Seashells can also handle the cold. When used as display pieces in the chill cabinet repeated cycles of washing may dull the seashells’ colour. This can be restored with a very light coating of cooking oil.
